Many Central Floridians are familiar with a fiery crash that occurred on November 16, 2011, on Interstate 4 near Lake Mary. Anyone that was travelling on I-4 that day knows that traffic was tied up for hours after a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee was rear-ended and burst into flames, ultimately causing the wrongful death of a 24-year old passenger in the Jeep.
According to a piece in the New York Times, the Florida Highway Patrol determined that the Jeep was rear-ended at approximately 65 miler per hour. Based upon the complaints about ruptured or leaking fuel tanks involving Grand Cherokees over the past several years, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration decided to investigate the Lake Mary accident.
Hopefully, N.H.T.S.A. can get to the bottom of this issue soon. According to Experian Automotive, there are approximately 2.2 million Grand Cherokees still operating on American roads.
