WFTV in Orlando recently ran
this piece that made me question the wisdom of some of the truckers and trucking companies hauling freight through Orlando on Interstate 4. The news reported that, due to overcrowded parking in the state rest stop just north of Longwood, many truckers have started parking their semi tractor-trailer rigs on the shoulder of I-4 overnight.
Apparently, there have been several motor vehicle accidents related to the trucks sticking out, or being very close to, the through lanes of travel on I-4. The Florida Highway Patrol seems to be aware of the problem, but claim that they do not have enough manpower on the overnight shift to do much about it.
Frankly, as an
Orlando personal injury lawyer, I am surprised that the owners of these trucks parked on the edge of Interstate 4 would allow their drivers to create such a dangerous condition. Large trucks parked in areas where other drivers would not automatically anticipate them to be are a huge liability risk. Despite how well these trucks may be marked, their immense size and weight make them similar to crashing into a brick wall. The truck drivers in question would be much wiser to find another place to park, or even better, to find a truck stop.
