According to media reports, Mr. Bundidge was released from his job by the Seminole County School Board at the end of May. Mr. Bundridge has now been criminally charged with sexual battery and lewd and lascivious battery on a child. WFTV reported that both a student and a teacher had reported than an inappropriate relationship going on, and that other witnesses had seen the man taking the child into a janitor's closet during school hours. Unnamed witnesses are also credited with seeing Mr. Bundidge take the child to a hotel near Lake Mary High.
Unfortunately, these kinds of stories of child sexual abuse seem to be all too commonplace these days. The response from the Seminole County School Board -- that Mr. Bundidge was "immediately" removed from the school after learning of the allegations -- is standard in my experience as a Central Florida child sex abuse attorney.
However, situations like this seem to demand answers to more difficult questions such as, "How carefully was this man background-checked before he was placed in regular contact with childrn?"; or, "How closely was Mr. Bundidge being supervised if he was able to steal away with a 14-year old girl into a broom closet?"; or "How much supervision did Lake Mary High School have over this man - or its student - if the two of them were allowed to leave together in a car and to to a hotel near the campus?"
Hopefully, the media will stay interested in this case. It would be interesting to learn how long this relationship was going on -- seemingly right under the noses of the teachers, staff, and administrators at Lake Mary. Similarly, it would be interesting so see if any additional girls come forward. In my experience, pedophiles who prey on young girls generally are attempting to juggle several girls at the same time. Finally, it wouldn't surprise me at if Mr. Brundidge had one or more incidents in his past that called into question his fitness to be around children.
