Orange County Begins Effort To Put Strict Limits On Pill Mills

Orange County leaders announced a concerted effort by Orange County Government to limit the proliferation of pill mill pain clinics in Orange County.  Mayor Richard Crotty and Sheriff Jerry Demings discussed a new ordinance they are working on that they hope will curb the growth of pain clinics in the local area.  Right now, there a 61 self-described pain clinics in Orange County.

Mayor Crotty has a legal team researching ways to keep the wrong kinds of pain clinics from opening in Orange County.  One way they have discussed is prohibiting "cash only" pain clinics.  Another solution they have discussed is rigorous background checks of pain clinic workers to make sure that people with histories of drug abuse or drug trafficking are not involved with these businesses.  County officials also plan to limit the hours of Orange County pain clinics, as well as establish minimum parking and other business requirements.

Orange County and Mayor Crotty are responding to new statistics showing the wrongful deaths by prescription drug overdoses are soaring.

For the time being, and until the County actually gets around to passing an ordinance, the best the County can do is to make it publicly known that Central Florida is going to become inhospitable to pill mills.
