A piece on the local Channel 5 website highlights a frequent hazard faced by motorcyclists on the roads of Central Florida, and unfortunately contributes to many serious motorcycle accidents.
A 19-year old former high school football player was tragically killed on U.S. HIghway 1 in Melbourne when he could not avoid a tractor that was trying to change lanes and barely moving. Several eyewitnesses apparently reported that the motorcycle was moving at a high rate of speed, but media reports did not indicate whether the motorcycle was travelling faster than the posted speed limit.
As an Orlando accident attorney, I have seen more than my fair share of tragic wrongful deaths from motorcycle accidents. Many of these motorcycle crashes occur as a result of motorists (or in this case, a tractor operator) pulling into traffic or changing lanes directly into the path of a motorcyclists.
While there seems to be a first impulse to blame motorcyclists for these kinds of accidents, many times there is little a motorcyclist can do -- regardless of the speed they are traveling.
